The 16th Bristol Girls Brigade (GB) has been based at our church for over 50 years and we still have two of the original girls involved.
We currently have 15 girls aged from the 4 upwards and new members are always welcome. Our fees are £2 per night or £9 per school half term.
We like the girls to have our uniform but for us it’s more important that the girls come along and enjoy themselves rather than wear the correct clothes. At least once a term we have a fun night such as Christmas crafts, mocktail evening and going to the park.
The girls are split into 4 different age groups:-
Girls work towards badges through a wide range of activities. Subjects include Our bodies and Our families for our younger members to looking at how to keep yourself safe in today’s society for the older girls.
We have an experienced leadership team who are all CRB/DBS checked.
GB takes place on every Wednesday in South Glos term time from 6pm – 7.30pm for younger girls and until 8pm for girls in Key Stage 2.
If you would like any additional information regarding GB, please contact Girls Brigade England and Wales.
Update on the last year
Over the last year, Girls Brigade has been celebrating it’s 125 years anniversary. As a group we thought this was a good opportunity to try out lots of different things. We have entered the national competition for two of the age groups, gone tobogganing in the dark and visited the Wild Place.
The national competition was a series of timed tasks that the girls had no prior knowledge of which were overseen a third party which took place on a normal group night. We asked Sue a church member to oversee one group of girls and Helen (a District leader) facilitated the other group.
One of the activities for the competition was to lay the table with two people correctly. Luckily the girls had already practiced this a couple of weeks as part of topic about helping at home. The other tasks included a crossword and designing a place mat.
The older group of girls (11 plus) had to decorate a cake for a guest. This was their design based on the nativity. They also had to complete a cryptogram and design an invite a party or event.
Since the start of the GB year, the girls have had a couple of fun nights. The first night back was a games night. This meant that everyone had the opportunity to play some games. The KS1 games played table top games such as Snakes and Ladders, Jenga and Snap. Whilst the older girls played card games with their favourite being "Happy families” along with UNO. Our second night back was looking at Harvest. The KS1 girls made scarecrows to take home. The older girls made seed mosaics from lentils, kidneys and sunflower seeds.
This term will be looking at the Our Holidays with the KS1 girls whilst our older girls will be thinking about Our Communities.
